Characteristic of a Novice Teacher

1. Have a commitment to and skills for lifelong learning.
For this characteristic, I am using the state Science convention I attended in Fall 2012 in Martinsburg Virginia. This contributes to lifelong learning because this conference is something I will attend once I get hired as a teacher that will help me stay up to date with Science.

10. Be Liberally educated.
For this characteristc, I will use the portfolio I made for the art class I took in the fall of 2011. This course helped me to integrate art in the classroom for the content areas. This art class was very labor extensive and provided me with many ideas to use for all different content areas to many learning hands on.

  1. For characteristic number one, you could also use research that you have been completing or will in your intern year. The action research that we will be a part of in the future will help you improve yourself and your skills, in terms of being a teacher. Research helps you better understand your classroom setting and constantly makes you a better and more informed teacher. Another would be meetings that you attend, whether they are for the Common Core, PLC meetings, or any kind of meeting in your content. As a teacher, it is so important to stay up on new ideas and findings that can improve your classroom.

For characteristic number ten, you could also use your CHPR unit plan. This took a lot of time to put together and still relates to teaching, without actually being directly involved with the Benedum. You could also use papers that you have written for other classes, like Math 232/233 or other subjects. Any of these papers or projects will represent you well as a student, and future teacher, who is liberally educated.

  2. I agree with Joni's comments. SInce we've been engaged in research for the time we were accepted to the program we have learned about many different aspects of teaching. We will continue to do so as we complete our intern year and actually start working with our own classes of students.

I like the idea that we can use the CHPR unit plan because it isn't a class that is directly correlated to Benedum. That was a unit that took time and thoughtful thinking because we had to have multiple lesson plan that coincided with one another. Also, it'll be beneficial for us to be able to look back at that project knowing that was in the very beginning of our teaching career. Any sort of staff development provided by your school or ones you attend outside can be supportive to being liberally educated.
